Discovering crochet has been such a wonderful journey and, for the last three years, I have been improving my skills and exploring different creative avenues. One of the things I love about crochet is that you only really need 5 items in hand and some simple techniques, in order to create handmade, personalized items for yourself or for friends.
In today’s post, I am sharing with you, the 5 Must-Have Tools & Supplies for Beginners.
I strongly believe that crochet is one of those crafts that, even if you don’t become a ‘crochet-genius’, you can still receive lots of satisfaction from it and impress the people around you 🙂
So, let’s have a look at the must-have items you need to get, before you embark in this satisfying and therapeutic journey of crochet.

The most important tool for crochet is the hook. It comes in many different sizes, colors and shapes but personally, when I crochet I use a 3.5 mm hook 90% of the times. See what feels comfortable to you. Prices vary, too but stick to what is affordable, especially in the beginning. My hook costs 1 € and a couple of other ones, cost between 2.5 € to 5 €. The decision is yours!

This is the other most important thing you will need. Beautiful, soft, thin, bulky, cotton, acrylic, wool…. Yarn can be all this and much more! There are so many other types available that you will be spoiled for choice. This is the one thing that I bet you will have hard time to decide which one to get. Again prices range and it’s best to get something cheap for the first projects, so you can practice. When you feel that you mastered a stitch and want to make something, then choose the one that is appropriate for your project. There are numerous online places to buy yarn and lots of offers if you buy bulk. If you decide to go to a specialist shop, then the shop owners will be happy to guide you, so you can make the right choice.

Scissors are as important as the other two tools mentioned above, and that’s because you will need to cut the threads when a project is complete or even cut loose threads, when changing color. Ideally, use small, sharp scissors that can be easy to carry around.
Yarn needles, or else tapestry needles, are very useful when at the end of each project you will need to weave in ends, sew squares or pieces together or cross stitch on your work.

Last but not least, is the storage of all the above. I am not talking about storage that can hold all of your yarn, because that would be another post altogether. Every crocheter, like you, needs a little basket, box or bag that can hold your tools and the latest project(s) you are working on! You need something easy to carry, so you can move it around the house and crochet wherever you fancy!
As you are getting better and better, you will probably need/want to get
the following three items:
